Fluorescamine is nonfluorescent until it reacts with primary amines. The reaction is completed in miniseconds and can be used to detect amine-containing compounds including peptides and proteins. Unreacted fluorescamine is rapidly converted to a non-fluorescent product by reaction with water, making amine detection highly specific.
